Maddie lives in a world where everything is done on the computer. Whether it’s to go to school or on a date, people don’t venture out of their home. There’s really no need. For the most part, Maddie’s okay with the solitary, digital life—until she meets Justin. Justin likes being with people. He enjoys the physical closeness of face-to-face interactions. People aren’t meant to be alone, he tells her.

Suddenly, Maddie feels something awakening inside her—a feeling that maybe there is a different, better way to live. But with society and her parents telling her otherwise, Maddie is going to have to learn to stand up for herself if she wants to change the path her life is taking.

In this not-so-brave new world, two young people struggle to carve out their own space.

In this provocative cautionary tale for teens, the sequel to Awaken, seventeen-year-old Maddie’s rebellion against the digital-only life grows dangerous. Maddie is in Los Angeles, trying to stay out of trouble. But one night, a seemingly small act of defiance lands her in the place she fears the most: a detention center. Here, patients are reprogrammed to accept a digital existence. Maddie is now fighting for her mind, her soul, and her very life. Once again, Katie Kacvinsky paints a disturbing picture of our increasingly technology-based society.

What starts as friendship, turns into admiration, respect and caring, until finally these two lone souls find they are truly in love with each other.

But staying in love is not as easy as falling in love. If Dylan and Gray want their love to last, they’re going to have to work at it. And learn that sometimes love means having to say you’re sorry.

***A finalist for the 2013 Oregon Book Awards***

“You’ll love it if… you’re looking for the perfect love story to kick-start your summer reading. It’s The Notebook with a slight touch of cynicism and sarcasm.” —

“The novel beautifully evokes both the intense exhilaration of first love (including a first sexual experience), and the piercing understanding that this moment is only the starting point for lives that won’t necessarily unfold in the same way or at the same pace for each lover.” —

“Gray and Dylan are compelling characters who will appeal to readers in search of a good love story set on the brink of the post-high-school world.”
— School Library Journal

I read Awaken and Middle Ground in two days while on vacation in Mexico last summer and was devastated to find out that, not only had the third book not been released yet, but it didn’t even have a release date or a title. I have never been so enveloped in a book series before. Your writing really brings Maddie and Justin’s love story to life, while still addressing a major modern day issue, technology. I just can’t wait for the book to be released tomorrow! I’ve been waiting for so long and I just know it will be worth it 🙂 Keep writing awesome stuff!

I’m from Germany and I started reading Awaken when it was released. And I never loved reading as much as I did back then (and I still love reading the books now!)
I’m not really patient so I read the German Version while waiting for Middle Ground.
And then I was waiting for Still Point -patiently- and I read all of the books english and german again and again, and now the moment has come that the next and last 😦 book will be released. I wish there would come more, because I can’t get enough of Maddie and Justin. The Story is so close to reality. I also recommended the book series to friends and they love it too.
Thanks Katie for such an incredible book series.

Any chance of an audio book? This would really help my struggling readers.

  9. Alright so I LOVED Awaken and I was absolutely entranced by Middle Ground, I read Still Point in one day, it’s such a fast read and I’m going to go ahead and say you’re probably my favorite author but I must also say Still Point was nothing I had ecpected and honestly (I’ll try not to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t read it yet) I think it could’ve ended better, and it felt kind of rushed. Respectfully I know you must have a loton your plate as it is but maybe the story shouldn’t end just yet.

  18. lunaolive says:

Hi, Katie! It’s been SO long since I’ve come to your site. The first Time I did, I was about 13 and I had just finished “First Comes Love”
I made a comment, about how much I enjoyed your books.
I have spent all my money on that series thus far, (yes, I’ve read the last book) and I cried so much at the end of finally forever, it was so sweet, so beautiful and had such a realistic ending! It was fun to see them grow up from being newly college students to wanting to spend the rest of their lives together.
And the first book I ever read was OBVIOUSLY Awaken. This book saved me from the terrible times I had as a homeschooled teen sitting alone in my room wondering if I was ever going be happy in my life. I read that book over and over in my online school library, just imagining what my life would be like if I was there.
After reading that book for the 4th time, I decided to look up when the next book would come out. While I waited for the next book, I wrote a continued story on how I thought the next book was going to be. THIS STORY WAS OVER 200 PAGES! I spent every day of 2013 writing it haha.

I loved the books AND most of all I loved the person who wrote them.
Now, I’m 15 going on 16 in February, I’ve read every single one of your books (NOT including Still Point) and I have to say you influenced my life more than anyone.

I’ve written almost 20 books of my own and the first one that I plan to publish before the end of next year is “Basket Case”
It’s about a girl who decided to write the words that she’s been feeling and telling the world how she conquered her sorrows and troubles with just a little nudge of fictional stories

and for some reason when I was writing this story all I thought about was how similar this character was to myself.

I hope that soon I can get an e-reader so I can read you last book “Still Point”
I waited for it when I heard it was making its debut and now I’m still waiting.
I am not disappointed though because I know you are human, and I know you are waiting for the support that you’ve earned just as much as we are waiting to read you wonderful words and let them flow to our brains and make us excited, confused, upset, annoyed and so on.

That’s just how much your stories make me feel.

I pray that you and your family are doing well, and some day I hope to meet the person who made me who I am today. 🙂

Is Still Point available in print? I’m dying to finish the trilogy but I hate ebooks. I like holding the book.

  21. Cher says:

I recently read Awaken with my high-school daughter, as this was a summer reading assignment for her. This book is a very good read and I can’t wait to read Middle Ground. To that I wanted to add that I keep listening to a song that reminds me of the book. The song is called ‘Starving’ by Hailee Steinfeld. I promise that every time I hear this song, I swear it was specifically written to coincide with ‘Awaken’. Check out the song, if and when you can. Until then, I will continue reading.

  22. Devin says:

Hello, I found your book Awaken in my school library and its been overdue for about 3 months right now because i just keep re reading the series. i just want to say when i read your books everything else surrounding me turns into white noise and i feel like I’m Maddie( i know i sound crazy, but like Elaine said id rather be off my rocker than stuck in one!). i do however wish still point was a paper or hard cover book so i could see my progress, and hear the pages crinkle when i turn them i feel like with the storyline it also makes sense not that that really quite matters anyway. I keep re reading the series because i don’t want to miss a word each time i find something else, feel something, love something else. But also – this is a shot in the dark i know- what if there was a book from Justin’s perspective when he met her and as he lived on the east coast. i just can’t shake the feeling that there is so much more to be told in awaken. its no question your my favorite author btw so many people might disagree but i don’t think you should make your books into movies, because then any wonder i have about a character and how they look or how the world looks or even the actors skill to portray such complex feelings would be tarnished. as well as a lot of the story in awaken is internal and its in my opinion the glue of your books. I can’t tell you enough how much i look forward to your book due to release in 2017! UGH I’m dying to read it! you truly have a gift with words the day you stop writing might very well be the death of me. No I’m just kidding but i have never read such understated under appreciated WORKS OF ART like the waken series. It crushes me that not everybody can enjoy it like i do. Best wishes and good luck in your future from central New Jersey.
P.s sorry for my tragic grammar all these thoughts just flew to my finger tips and i could not control them or wait any longer for you to see this comment.

    • Devin says:

P.Ps I wish i could meet you and hug you and i agree with the messages you put through writing it makes me sad that love like that doesn’t exist in real life i wish i could find my own Justin and Jax ( except i would of told Justin i would stay with my family for a couple moths and then meet him on the east coast)

  23. Kayla Gulliver says:

Hello I love your books your an amazing writer. I have only so far read Awaken and Middle Ground, I really want to read Still Point, but when I read books I like to have the really physical book in my hands. The thing is I can’t find the paperback of Still Point any where, I can only find it on stuff like eBook and nook but I was just wondering if they ever came out in paperback. I love the way you wrote the books the story is interesting it draws me right in. I would really like to me you in person one day but who knows. I really want to read your other books, because I love your writing style. Well thank you writing the awaken trilogy opening my eyes to see where technology is taking us, and making me think twice one what to do every day instead of just hanging out in room on my computer and to socialize more. Again thank you very much for a eye opening trilogy I can’t wait for the third book Still Point once I get my hands on it.
